Rückblick/Ausblick

Ungefähr 80 von geplanten 160 Reistagen von Singapur nach München sind nun vergangen. Auch knapp die Hälfte der ursprünglich geplanten Strecke haben wir bereist. Zeit für einen kurzen Rück- und Ausblick – insbesondere auch, weil wir uns nun in Xi’an/China im Rahmen der COVID Pandemie entscheiden müssen, wie unsere Reise weitergehen soll.

Bisher sind wir wirklich super happy mit unserer gemeinsamen Reise! Unglaublich tolle und vielfältige Eindrücke, Erfahrungen und Erlebnisse konnten wir machen. Angefangen von unserem Start in Singapur, erlebnisreichen Stopps in Malaysia, viel Zeit in Thailand (für Strand, Tauchen, Sightseeing, Wandern), das überraschend tolle Laos und nun bereits 1,5 Monate im faszinierenden China.

Das größte Glück hatten wir natürlich mit dem Timing: die ersten Länder konnten wir noch vor Ausbruch der COVID Pandemie erleben, um dann die wenigen Tagen abzupassen, in denen man nach China einreisen durfte, wo sich die Lage sehr entspannt hatte und (eingeschränktes) Reisen möglich und vertretbar ist.

Für die Weiterreise sieht es nun anders aus und wir sind realistisch, dass wir die ursprünglich geplante Strecke durch Zentral- und Vorderasien nach Europa nicht durchführen können und sollten. Unser konkretes nächstes Ziel – Kasachstan – hat gerade die Einreise für Ausländer bis zum 1. November 2020 ausgeschlossen. Auch die nachfolgenden Länder auf der Route, z.B. Iran oder Türkei, sind ausgeschlossen.

Einerseits ist dies sehr traurig für uns: wir haben bereits viel Zeit in die Planung gesteckt, hatten große Vorfreude auf diese tollen Ländern. Darüber hinaus werden wir in den nächsten Jahren schwerlich eine lang ausgedehnte Auszeit einrichten können. Andererseits: wie gehabt sind wir froh, die vergangenen 3 Monate nutzen und genießen zu können. Auch die verbleibenden 2,5 Monate wird es uns nicht langweilig werden! Und darüber hinaus versuche ich die Umplanung positiv zu sehen: Für Zentralasien (die Stans), wäre die Reisezeit sowieso nicht optimal gewesen (noch zu kalt), für den Iran können wir immer noch eine ausgedehnte Rundreise in der Zukunft planen, etc. etc. etc.

Auf unserer Weiterreise von Xi’an aus werden wir nun nicht wie geplant nach Westen, Richtung Urumqi und dann Kasachstan weiterfahren; sondern wir werden nach Osten abbiegen, um noch etwas Zeit in China zu verbringen mit dem Ziel Shanghai. Von Shanghai aus werden wir dann nach Europa fliegen, wobei wir das wirkliche Ziel erst Mitte/Ende Mai in Abhängigkeit der zukünftigen Reisebeschränkungen und des Pandemieverlaufs entscheiden werden. Review/Outlook

About 80 days of our planned 160 days of travel from Singapore to Munich have now passed. We have also travelled almost half of the originally planned route. Time for a brief review and outlook – especially as we now have to decide in Xi’an/China in context of the COVID epidemic how to continue our journey.

So far we are really super happy with our trip together! We could make unbelievable great and varied impressions, experiences and adventures. Starting with our departure from Singapore, exciting stops in Malaysia, lots of time in Thailand (for beach, diving, sightseeing, hiking), the surprisingly great Laos and now already 1.5 months in fascinating China.

Of course, we were the most lucky with the timing of our trip: we were able to experience the first countries before the outbreak of the COVID pandemic and then wait for the few days when we were allowed to enter China, where the situation was starting to relax and (limited) travel is possible and justifiable.

For the onward journey it now looks different and we are realistic that we cannot and should not carry out the originally planned route through Central and Western Asia to Europe. Our concrete next destination – Kazakhstan – has just excluded entry for foreigners until November 1^st, 2020. The following countries on the route, e.g. Iran or Turkey, are also not an option.

On the one hand, this is very sad for us: we have already invested a lot of time in planning, had much anticipation for these great countries. Furthermore, we will hardly be able to arrange a long extended time-out in the next years. On the other hand: we are very happy to be able to use and enjoy the past 3 months. Also the remaining 2.5 months won’t be boring for us! And beyond that I try to see the rescheduling in a positive light: For Central Asia (the Stans), the time of year would not have been optimal anyway (still too cold), for Iran we can still plan an extended round trip in the future, etc. etc. etc.

On our onward journey from Xi’an we now won’t continue as planned to the west, towards Urumqi and then Kazakhstan. Instead, we will turn east to spend some more time in China with the final destination Shanghai. From Shanghai, we will then fly to Europe, although we will not decide the real place of arrival until mid/end of May, depending on future travel restrictions and the course of the pandemic.
